Brushing is important at all times, but especially with braces. Dr. Wilson asks patients to keep their braces and teeth as shiny as the day we first put the braces on! By keeping the teeth clean, patients are proud to smile when treatment is completed and braces are removedā¦..because a smile is forever!
Also, Dr. Wilson recommends patients have their teeth cleaned by their dentist every three months while in treatment.
Interdental Toothbrush
A Proxabrush is an interdental (between the teeth) toothbrush that is used to clean underneath and around the wires and braces. It should be used gently to avoid damaging the wires. The Proxabrush helps clean braces while maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
Antibacterial Mouthwash
Peroxyl, a hydrogen peroxide antiseptic mouth rinse, reduces inflammation to gums and cheeks. Peroxyl helps to prevent infection and decrease irritation that may develop from braces. Just like using peroxide for a scrape on skin, Peroxyl helps the inside of the mouth heal. Peroxyl can be used for general irritation caused by braces or for canker sores, cheek bites and other minor temporary injuries to the gums. Patients should rinse their mouth with two teaspoons of Peroxyl (half a capful) for one minute and then spit it out. Peroxyl can be used up to four times daily, and it is particularly effective after brushing.
Cleaning Retainers
Retainers should be brushed every day as part of a regular brushing and flossing routine. Because food particles and plaque can accumulate on the retainer just as they do on teeth, it needs to be cared for similarly. Patients should use a toothbrush and toothpaste with cold water to thoroughly brush retainers. Warm or hot water should never be used as it can distort the shape of the appliance. Also, products such as Polident, Efferdent or other denture-cleaning tablets are too harsh and can damage retainers. Keeping retainers clean makes them taste better and helps prevent plaque and bacterial accumulation that can eventually lead to tooth decay.
